Europe’s leading regional or minority language organisation, the European Language Equality Network, will be holding its Steering Committee meeting in Valencia on Saturday May 24th
The meeting will be hosted by Acció Cultural del País Valencià (ACPV) and gathers the leading advocacy organisations for regional or minority languages from across Europe.
Discussions will focus on developments in the EU and UN for regional or minority languages, the French ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML), as well as the current challenges facing Basque, Catalan and Galician.
The meeting is being held on the same date as the European elections at a time when lesser used language communities are facing problems of endangerment and discrimination, and when European Union support for these languages has hit an all time low.
Furthermore, ELEN will be considering what actions to take at the European and international level regarding the Spanish state considering the Madrid government’s (and its offshoot administrations in València, Illes Balears, Navarre and Galicia), almost daily contraventions of European norms for the protection of Catalan, Basque and Galician, – norms that Spain, under international treaties, is obliged to live up to.
The network, formed in Strasbourg in 2011, replaced the former European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages (EBLUL) and today represents 42 language communities from 23 European states. Its work focuses on promoting and protecting Europe’s lesser-used, regional, minority, and endangered languages, as well as working for their revitalisation.
Founded in 1978, Acció Cultural del País Valencià (ACPV) is an association dedicated to the study, protection and promotion of Valencian cultural heritage. It has had to face numerous challenges, and most recently threats, to its existence from the Valencian government, particularly over support for TV booster stations set up to enable the broadcasting of Catalan language TV3 in Valencia.

La plus grande coordination militante d’Europe en faveur des langues se rassemble à Valence
Le Réseau Européen pour l’Egalité des Langues, principale coordination européenne pour les langues régionales ou minoritaires, tiendra son prochain Conseil d’Administration à Valence le samedi 24 mai.
La réunion, accueillie par Acció Cultural del País Valencià (ACPV), regroupe les principales organisations de défense des langues régionales ou minoritaires de toute l’Europe.
Les débats porteront sur les avancées de l’UE et de l’ONU dans le domaine des langues régionales ou minoritaires, la ratification par la France de la Charte Européenne des Langues Régionales ou Minoritaires, ainsi que sur les enjeux actuels concernant les langues basque, catalane et galicienne.
La réunion se tiendra en même temps que les élections européennes, à un moment où les communautés linguistiques minoritaires sont concernées par des questions d’extinction et de discrimination, et où le soutien apporté à ces langues par l’Union européenne atteint un niveau historiquement bas.

Elle a du faire face à de nombreux défis, et plus récemment à des menaces du gouvernement de Valence sur son existence, en particulier concernant les postes de relais de télévision permettant la diffusion de la chaîne TV3 en langue catalane à Valence.
